Only the beginning…

Thank you to the Tenants and allys who came to our first meeting yesterday! The meeting marks the official beginning of Tenants United Anaheim. Check out the text of the establishing motion:

Motion to form Tenants United Anaheim as a Union of residential Tenants in the city of Anaheim, California, by Adrian S

Given the general interest in forming a tenants’ union in the City of Anaheim, especially following the success of Tenants United Santa Ana, I move to form Tenants United Anaheim (TUA) as a Union of residential Tenants in and of the City of Anaheim, California.

The ongoing lack of support from elected officials, in addition to coercive living conditions upheld by predatory and dishonest landlords, continues to push members of our communities out of their homes, and, in many cases, out on to the streets where they are unhoused.

The aforementioned conditions, which are corrosive to public life, necessitate solidarity among Tenants and action from the Union in order to ensure that nobody in the community ever faces unjust displacement.

Only Members of the Union are eligible to vote on Union matters. Anybody who is a Tenant residing in the City of Anaheim can be a Member. Membership will currently be based on good faith, with further requirements to be later discussed and voted upon as needed. Members must be present at any meeting in which they wish to vote.

Allys to the Union, such as resident homeowners who are not themselves landlords, are welcome but are not eligible to vote, as they are not Tenants. Those who are tenants that do not reside in the City of Anaheim are welcome, but not eligible to vote, as they do not reside in the City of Anaheim.

Excluded from membership of this Union by default are landlords of any type and law enforcement officials, even if they are tenants themselves. Each is in a position of power to deprive people of their right to housing and thus by nature are counterproductive to the purpose of this Union.

Rusty’s Rules of Order (an abridged Robert’s Rules of Order) will be adopted as a procedural guide for this and all subsequent meetings.
