Mission Statement

The mission of Tenants United Anaheim is to build grassroots power and solidarity between diverse working-class neighborhoods. Through organizing, direct action, coalition building, and civic engagement, our union will strive to keep people in their homes and to achieve dignity and security for all tenants regardless of their immigration status. We are dedicated to making improvements in the living conditions of our members and winning safe, secure, and affordable housing for all.

Code of Conduct

The following code of conduct is expected of all persons who are officers, members, and friends of Tenants United Anaheim.

Acceptable Behavior:

1. Be kind and courteous to each other.
2. Treat everyone fairly.
3. Recognize and value individual differences.
4. Be truthful in all matters.
5. Limit discussion and debate to the issues at hand; avoid personalities.
6. Disclose influences, interests, or relationships that might conflict with the work of the union.

Unacceptable behavior:

1. Violence, threats of violence, or violent language directed toward others.
2. Sexist, racist, homophobic, transphobic, ableist, or otherwise discriminatory language, behavior, and “jokes.”
3. Sharing or displaying sexually explicit or violent material.
4. Posting or threatening to post personally identifying information online (i.e., “doxing”).
5. Personal insults and demeaning behavior especially those related to gender, sexual orientation, race, age, religion, or disability.
6. Inappropriate physical contact (i.e., touching without consent).
7. Unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature.
8. Bullying, intimidation, harassment, or stalking.
9. Sustained disruption of meetings, events, or activities, including talks and presentations.
10. Spamming, trolling, flaming, baiting, and other attention-stealing behavior.
11. Inappropriate photography or recording.
12. Unauthorized disclosure of names, emails, home addresses, phone numbers, or other information.
13. Spreading false rumors.
14. Snitch-jacketing (i.e., wrongly accusing someone of being an informant).
15. Advocating for, or encouraging, any of the above behavior.

Consequences of Unacceptable Behavior:

Tenants United Anaheim will take all violations of the code of conduct seriously, and may, at its discretion, take any corrective actions that it deems appropriate upon assessing the situation.

All complaints will be directed to the steering committee and treated confidentially to the extent consistent with the need to properly assess and address the circumstances in question.

Points of Unity

MUTUAL SUPPORT – No one is alone. We commit to having each other’s backs, and to listen to and support one another through our struggles.

COLLECTIVE ACTION – Taking action together gets the goods. We will not win what we deserve if we fight alone.

EQUALITY – No matter your race, gender, sexual orientation, or physical ability. As working class people, we are equals and must treat each other as equals while loving our differences. We must work day-to-day to challenge sexism, racism, ableism, homophobia, transphobia and all other prejudices that divide us.

FIGHTING BACK AGAINST ALL UNJUST EVICTIONS – No one should have to face displacement or homelessness.

EVERYONE DESERVES DIGNIFIED HOUSING – No one deserves to live in unsafe and unhealthy conditions.

LANDLORDS’ INTERESTS ARE NOT ALIGNED WITH OURS – Everyone deserves a home, but landlords profit by controlling more property than they need and charging rent. This system allows them to become rich while tenants struggle. Their business model depends on extracting money from renters, making exploitation central to their profit. To achieve housing that is fair and free from financial burden, we must challenge this structure and work toward a system that benefits everyone.

HOUSING FOR PEOPLE, NOT FOR PROFIT – Instead of serving the wealthy as a source of profit, housing should be owned, controlled and managed by the people who live in it, ensuring fairness, security, and shared prosperity for all.

SOLIDARITY – An injury to one is an injury to all.

GENTRIFICATION IS NOT INEVITABLE – Gentrification is a process led and nurtured by various stakeholders like developers, landlords, business owners, and politicians.
